The longevity of this map is due to its status as a turning point in the cartography of Africa. It was the first map to exclude the two Ptolemaic lakes that was thought to be the sources of the Nile. De L'Isle also corrected the longitude of the Mediterranean, thereby changing the shape of North Africa to a more accurate width. The fort at the Cape is shown (Fort de Hollandois) as well as Hellenbok (Stellenbosch).
De L'Isle is regarded as the father of modern geography. He espoused a scientific approach, and attempted to use only verifiable information as well as constantly updating his maps.
