William Foster, Manchester, an oak longcase clock the eight-day duration movement striking the hours on a bell with the fourteen-inch painted break-arch dial having black Roman numerals, blued-steel hands, the centre with subsidiary seconds dial and date aperture, the four corners painted with floral decoration, the arch painted with a scene depicting gilt flowers on a black ground, the cast-iron falseplate to the dial rear embossed with the dial makers name Hipkiss & Harold, the oak case with quartered-columns with the hood having turned pillars and a swan-neck pediment, height 224cm. Notes: William Foster is recorded as working in Manchester circa 1808/09. Hipkiss and Harold are recorded as dialmakers working in Suffolk Street, Birmingham from 1797 until 1807 after which Richard Hipkiss worked alone.
