A VICTORIAN 57TH REGIMENT OF FOOT CROSS BELT PLATE. A Victorian brass cross belt plate with '57' beneath a crown and within a wreath, with 'Albuhera' above. For the 57th Regiment of Foot (West Middlesex). Albuhera being the battle honour they were awarded as a result of their part in the battle in Spain, part of the Penninsula Wars, which resulted in terrible losses on both sides. It was as a result of thi action that the 57th became known as the 'Die hards' when the injured Colonel Inglis implored his men 'Die hard, my men, die hard'. Mid 19th century. 9.5 x 7 cm.
Fixings lacking, possible repair to front , perhaps as the result of battle damage.
