A SPECTACULAR RENAISSANCE FONTAINEBLEAU WALNUT THRONE CHAIR, FRANCE, LYON CIRCA 1540-1560. The high back Walnut armchair with moulded pediment above twin Corinthian capitals and uprights carved with laurel leaves, flanking a broken pediment architectural panel profusely carved with cornucopia of fruit, Caryatid and Atlanta supports and centred upon a female renaissance mask above a shell , the lower back with guilloche and a raised horizontal panel carved with geometric interlace, the bold scrolling arms further carved with geometric and acanthus palmettes terminating in fantastic Rams heads, supported on acanthus and fluted baluster uprights with matching rear split baluster supports, with a twin plank hinged, locking seat and interior box compartment. The box seated base with twin fielded and geometric carved panels, matching plain end panels with acanthus uprights.187cm high 82cm wide High status furniture of this style came from the second period of the Ecole De Fontainebleau School of Fontainebleau, inspired by furniture designed in two specific periods of the French renaissance, for the Palace of Fontainebleau. This Haute a Dossier Armchair being from the early years of the second school, with high renaissance ornament throughout and made from the finest Walnut timber. Being commissioned by the aristocracy and high-status patrons of the period, all made in the region around Lyons in southern France.
