Little Red Riding Hood - two Staffordshire fallback spill vases, circa 1850. Little Red Riding Hood appeared in a collection of French fairy tales published by Charles Perrault in 1697, translated into English in 1729. Little Red Riding Hood, carrying a basket of food for her grandmother, meets the wolf in the woods. The wolf finds, eats and impersonates the grandmother, lying in wait in her bed before eating Little Red Riding Hood. The cautionary tale was popular in early Victorian England and The Adelphi Theatre put on a burlesque dramatisation in about 1850. This may explain why these figurines were made. Height 25.5cm. (2).
