Bill (William) Gillon (1942-2021), 'Foetus Machoetus', triptych oil on wooden panel, overall 162cm x 163cm
NB: Bill was born in 1942 and studied at Edinburgh College of Art 1960-65. As part of the Scottish Realism Movement he exhibited alongside Alexender Moffat and John Bellany in the early 1970s.
Provenance: Purchased by the vendor's father at the 20X57 Exhibition, Edinburgh, 1971. The sum of £85 for the work was paid in instalments with the agreement of the artist.
The painting is in three parts united by a pine framework on the back. Where the elements of the painting join, there are small areas of paint loss, and similarly around the outer edges further paint loss. There are some areas of light water damage (see images). The paint has a light cracked finish particularly noticeable on the figures.
The painting has been both neglected and poorly stored in the past, probably in a damp interior. Because of its unusual shape the painting is unframed.
