David Garrick interest: A George II pewter wavy-edge plain rim plate, circa 1755

The rim with five lobes and engraved with the arms of GARRICK of Hampton, Middlesex, within a Rococo mantled cartouche, touchmarks to rear of Thomas Chamberlain, London, (fl.1732-1775), (PS1603), diameter 25cm

Provenance: The unregistered arms relate to David Garrick (1717-1779), the celebrated English actor, playwright and producer.  In 1754, possibly in an attempt to escape the pressure (and scandal) of London theatrical life Garrick employed John and Robert Adam to remodel Hampton House, Richmond, at the time known as Garrick’s Villa, for which this plate, part of a large garniture, was probably made

A plate, from the same service was sold Sotheby’s, R. F. Michaelis Collection, November 1973, Lot 46 and again at the Kenneth Bradshaw Collection, Sotheby’s June 1977, Lot 39

Literature: See H.H.Cotterell, ‘Old Pewter its Makers and Marks’ (1929), p. 124, pl. LVI(f) for a dish with the same arms, formerly in the Navarro Collection and presumably now part of the Fitzwilliam Collection, Cambridge
