The Cross was instituted by Royal Decree 205 on 19 January 1918 to be awarded to those whose military conduct deserved public recognition (che hanno tenuto … una condotta militare che li renda degni di pubblico encomio). After the fall of the monarchy at the end of World War II a revised version was issued by the Italian Republic. Italy. Medal for Military Aeronautical Long Service (Medaglia Militare Aeronautica di Lungi Navigazione Aerea) since 1953 issue



The medal was instituted in 1953 to replace the royal award created in 1926 and is awarded for long service in the Italian air force.
