** DARTMOOR (DEVON) - P.O.W. COVER WITH H.S. "Exd JM" & "JOHN MOORE" AUTOGRAPH INSIDE AS WELL; Very fine 6 May 1813 EL (unsealed) from "Dartmoor Prison" being a formal affidavit that the POW Naval Chef "Honore Gabriel" was alive etc. and that he had been captured (on 4 Nov. 1805) having been on board the 'Mont Blanc', part of vanquished French fleet at Trafalgar; it was sent via London (and Morlaix) to Toulon charged "13" (and forwarded to "Le Beausset" with v. fine "DEB.DE.TOULON" on the flap, beside a mainly fine rare Handstruck Dartmoor Prison Censor's "Exd JM" (John Moore) where a seal would have been. In addition the affidavit was signed as true by a number of French Officers, but also by the Camp Officials "John Moore, Interp[rete]r" and "Isaac Cotgrave, Agent". Highly desirable POW item with the Trafalgar Chef (!) connection and the John Moore autograph. [We can only recall having seen one other "John Moore" autographed cover; Cavendish 'Leon Janssen Collection', 10 Sept. 2015, lot 1144, realised £800+BP.] [See MFPWE, p.158.]Cross Reference: FRANCE, MILITARY - P.O.W.
