An impressive 19th century French boulle mantel clock, the gilt brass dial with white enamel porcelain numerals, the red tortoiseshell and brass case with applied ormolu Helios on his chariot, flanked by classical ladies, the whole supported by four horses, raised on a plinth with scroll legs, the movement by Vincenti & Cie and numbered 7000, 81, striking on a gong, sunburst pendulum, 76cm
Helios is usually depicted as a handsome young man crowned with the shining aureole of the Sun who drove the chariot of the Sun across the sky each day to Earth-circling Oceanus and through the world ocean returning to the East at night.
Jean Vincenti is thought to have been a Corsican who started a factory in Montbeliard, France in 1823, his business however failed in 1824 and was taken over by Roux who kept the Vincenti name; which by 1855 was Vincenti & Cie.
