ELEANOR ROOSEVELT. Four typed letters signed to Arthur Murray, Lord Elibank, 1949-56, and associated correspondence. Eleanor Roosevelt. Four typed letters signed to Arthur Murray, Lord Elibank, the first dated May 2 1948, discussing a visit from Mr. McKenzie-King, the Canadian Prime Minister, 1p.; another dated October 28, 1955, discussing political campaigns in the United States, 'President Eisenhower's illness has changed the situation a good deal. Everyone in the Republican party will feel he can win and everyone in the Democratic party who would ordinarily fight behind Stevenson will think he can get the nomination. However, Stevenson is well out in front and I hope he will get the nomination. I have been working for him and with him quite steadily in the last month and I think he is quite strong', 2pp.; another dated January 20, 1956, 'I don't know what is going to happen in the next nine months but I am doing what I can to get Mr Stevenson the nomination. Many of my friends tell me there is no question but that Eisenhower will be nominated and Nixon will be Vice-President. If that is the case the Democrats will have to work harder than ever because I doubt if Eisenhower can stand a second term and I doubt if the country can stand Nixon as President.', 1p., on headed paper; another dated November 14, 1956, discussing the Suez crisis, 'I was sorry that Great Britain took the action it did but I feel it was largely our responsibility because Britain and France had grown desperate in feeling that no leadership was coming from us. I have certainly felt the same way over Israel, and I am as discouraged as anyone can be about our foreign policy and the realization that we must go on with it in the next four years is rather appalling., 2pp., on headed paper; together with eleven TLS or typed copies, mostly from Arthur Murray, reminiscing, or discussing the travel arrangements for Eleanor Roosevelt and associated matters (24pp.). *Condition Report Many stapled, upper left, some discolouration, a few folded. **BP 22.5% (inc. VAT) + a lot fee of £8 (inc. VAT) on each lot. VAT is not applicable on books and unframed maps.
