HMS. Association, lost in the Isles of Scilly in 1707 A lead container or possibly a ‘counter-weight’ (?). Square with two lugs, measuring 11.5cm x 7.5cm, 3.7kg This item is a true historical puzzle, in 40 years Richard has never been able to establish its purpose or function. This item and the three others that follow, all appear to serve the same purpose, all being found in early British Men O’War, dating from 1707. This item is identical to a second, both from the wreck of HMS. Association, lost in the Isles of Scilly in 1707, but the other two are very different. They are not uniform in size so were not measures of some sort, and were the lugs for a handle? Perhaps a piece of timber was inserted and the lugs were for screws or nails?
