A pair of medals consisting of: Egypt and Sudan Medal (undated reverse) with two clasps Suakin 1885 and Tofrek, named to: 833 Pte W Barnshaw 1/RL Berks R, together with the Khedive’s Bronze Star dated 1884-6, impressed on reverse ‘Berks 833’. Moderate pitting to the silver medal from contact with the star, as is usual with these awards, otherwise very Fine condition. William Barnshaw was born in 1862 in Burham, Buckinghamshire and died in 1928 in Maidenhead, Berkshire. With copies of his service record and extract from medal roll confirming entitlement to clasps.
After the battle of Tofrek (or McNeill’s Zariba) on 22 March 1885 the 1st Battalion The Berkshire Regiment were awarded the title of ‘Royal’ by Queen Victoria in
recognition of their collective gallantry in repelling the Dervishes who had broken into the unfinished southern Zariba. "Her Majesty has been graciously pleased, in
recognition of the gallant conduct of Princess Charlotte of Wales’s (Berkshire Regiment) in the action at Tofrek, to approve of the Regiment being in future designated Princess Charlotte of Wales’s Royal Berkshire Regiment. Her Majesty has been further pleased to approve of the facings of the Regiment being changed from white to blue, the Royal facings."
