Russell (Lord John, 1st Earl, 1792-1878). An original manuscript letter, signed by Lord John Russell, dated 20th October 1865, to C. Williams, letter reads "The Queen, finding it necessary, after the heavy calamity which has befallen us, to take some immediate steps, has been pleased to ask me to carry on the present government as First Lord of the Treasury. I would not undertake so arduous a task without being assured of the confidence and support of my colleagues", 11.2cm x 18.3cm approx., letter tipped-in onto card for display purposes. Russell was the Prime Minster of Great Britain.
