TRIO TO NEW ZEALAND: 1860 env. without flap to New Zealand with a pair (left hand unit damaged) and single 2d blue plate 8, from Shrewsbury to Otahuhu, "AUCKLAND/FE 25/1861/NEW ZEALAND" receiving cancel. Also 1862 EL with 1855-57 6d to George Wardell (who lived with Sir George Grey for many years) with some details of his life. Third item is an EL, also to George Wardell bearing the 1862 9d bistre (SG £1200 on cover) and has a fine Liverpool 466 duplex cancel dated 25 Jan 1862, only 10 days after the date of issue. This letter deals with the sale of 'black sand' to be used in the manufacture of steel and the fall in price of kauri gum and refers to the Trent affair and the possibility of war with America, the surge in the price of cotton and the cancellation of an order for Sperm Whale oil.
