NEW ROMNEY INDIA LETTER FROM C.G.H. TO AN M.P. REDIRECTED IN 4d-POST PERIOD WITH "FREE" MARKS; Unusual 15 Oct. 1839 EL (interesting family letter destined for the M.P.'s daughter!) from "H.M.S. Melville, Simons Bay, Cape of Good Hope" to an M.P. in London, with a very fine boxed "NEW ROMNEY/INDIA LETTER" on the top flap (overstruck by red cds) and charged "8"; the charge was paid before redirection to "Dorking" and there are single/double ring London crowned "FREE" marks. Rare thus; Free marks on overseas mail struck on redirection during the 4d-Post Period are rare.Cross Reference: FREE MAIL, UNIFORM 4d POSTAGE PERIOD, CAPE OF GOOD HOPE, KENT
