Head and shoulders portrait of an old bearded man, wearing a velvet cap believed to be the Artist’s father, Douwe Jansz, 1584 - 1656, held in a fine period carved giltwood frame decorated with foliage.

N.B. The identity of the sitter in the present work is based on another portrait of Douwe Jansz attributed to his son GERRIT DOU , now housed in The McMaster Museum of Art, Ontario [Object 1984.007.0020].
Douwe Jansz was a stained glass maker by profession based in Leiden, and arranged for his son, Geritt, to study drawing under the engraver Bartholomeus Dolendo, before securing a place for him in the studio of Rembrandt in 1628. Geritt was fourteen, Rembrandt 22
