1793-1814 MGSM Toulouse clasp & 1815 Waterloo Medal to Samuel Bates 18th Regiment Hussars (Samuel Bates 18th Hussars on MGSM) MGSM with minor contact marks, good very fine, Waterloo with replacement clip and straight bar suspender, contact marks thus good fine. On the 8th April, 2 days before the Battle of Toulouse, the 18th Hussars charged and seized the bridge at Croix D'Orade on the Hers. At Waterloo, they charged the centre of the French line and captured some artillery pieces.
Sold with elaborately decorated and attractive 4 piece presentation silver tea and coffee set (sugar bowl is not silver) of octagonal form with scroll handles and moulded borders, gilt interiors, each piece engraved with foliate sprigs and crested, each piece engraved SB, tea pot additionally engraved Waterloo, milk jug Toulouse and sugar bowl Croix D'Orade, coffee pot engraved "Presented by Colonel the Earl of Ellesmere and the Officers of the Duke of Lancaster's Own Regiment of Yeomanry Cavalry To Serjt Major Samuel Bates Formerly of the 18th Hussars in acknowledgement of his long and faithful service in the Regiment January 1854." The set contained in a wooden presentation case with brass handles by Hunt & Roskill. Total silver weight circa 74oz. set with odd dent and handle loose on coffee pot, otherwise very fine to extremely fine.
With quantity of copied research including service papers, census etc, he was born in 1891 in Ravestown, Bucks, enlisted in 18th Hussars 8/5/09, discharged as a Corporal 1/1/23 on disbandment of the regiment. Unclear when he joined the Yeomanry, but in later life lived at Waterloo Cottage, Ulverston. Sold by the family in 2 separate lots at Duke's 14/12/06, with original receipt. (See photos) (B)
