A BRITISH EMPIRE MEDAL GROUP OF FIVE TO INSPECTOR OF RIGGERS H.M. DOCKYARD. A group of five comprising George VI British Empire Medal named to Ralph William Hooker, 1914-15 Star named to J.3821 R.W. Hooker A.B. R. N. War Medal and Victory Medal named to Hooker as Leading Seaman, and Second World War Defence Medal. Born on the 26th January 1893 in Eastchurch Isle of Sheppey, Kent. He joined the Royal Navy at H.M.S. Ganges on the 21st February 1909 as a 16 year old. He was invalided from the Navy on the 9th September 1919 at which time he began working in the Sheerness Dockyard in the mooring and rigging department becoming an Acting Inspector of Rigging. His B.E.M. was reported in the Gazette on the 31st December 1943. 'Ralph William Hooker, Acting Inspector of Riggers, H.M. Dockyard, Sheerness, Length of Service 23 years. Mr Hooker has shown great zeal and ability in organising and carrying out important mooring work with unfailing loyalty and cheerfulness in various areas from Dover to Scapa, and also under most difficult conditions in Iceland from May to November 1941.
