Scarce 1885 Royal Wimbledon Golf Club Monthly Medal - played at London Scottish Golf Club on Wimbledon Common - the rim of double crested medal is engraved "Winner J L Ridpath R.W.G.C - 97-15 x 82" c/w ribbon and bar and period fitted box. Note The Club was officially formed in 1860s by London Scottish Rifle Volunteers on Wimbledon Common - but in 1881 a major dispute erupted between the military and non-military members, which lead to the civilians to create what later became Royal Wimbledon Golf Club. Royal Wimbledon played on London Scottish Golf course until constructing its own links just off the common in 1907
