A large early 18th-century portrait of a nobleman with lace collar, reputedly John Maitland, 1st Duke of Lauderdale. Unsigned oil on canvas, 72 cm x 58 cm in a carved gilt frame.

Lot Essay:
John Maitland, 1st Duke of Lauderdale was a Scottish politician and leader within the Cabal Ministry. A member of the Privy Councils of both England and Scotland, his closeness to King Charles II in the time of the Restoration is even mentioned in the diary of Samuel Pepys (2 March 1664) as being "never from the king's ear nor council".
According to label verso, this painting was exhibited in the 'Palace of History' exhibition of 1911, as part of the Scottish Exhibition of National History, Art & Industry. Unfortunately, the lender and artist mentioned on the label are illegible.
