Nurse's 1940 London Blitz George Medal officially re-named to Aileen Ruth Turner good extremely fine. The joint award while serving as Senior Assistant Nurse at Grove Park Hospital along with Staff Nurse Mary Fleming was announced in the London Gazette dated 6th May 1941:
"When a high explosive bomb struck Grove Park Hospital , Nurse Turner and Nurse Fleming climbed through a first floor window, crawled across the floor of a ward which was in a highly dangerous condition and released several patients who were trapped. The quickness, coolness and courage of these two nurses resulted in all the patients being rescued a few minutes before the floor collapsed."
The air raid in question took place on 19th November 1940.
Sold with a good quantity of original documentation including Central Chancery invitation to the investiture to be held on 26/9/41 to Miss Aileen Turner G.M., London County Council (L.C.C.) letter dated 3/12/40 commending her conduct on the night 19/11/40, L.C.C. letters 13 & 14 May 1941 congratulating her on award of G.M., Royal Society of St George Aug 1941 letters inviting her to join the Society, Sep 1941 certificate awarding her to honorary membership of the society, London Civil Defence HQ letter with inch of G.M. ribbon to wear prior to investiture, Overseas League Luncheon menu and named ticket "In Honour of the Nurses of The Empire", Defence Medal transmittal slip to Miss A.R. Turner, Totteridge Lane, London N.20, George Medal box of issue, various newspapers and publications in which she is mentioned (often with a photo), photo with 2 other nurses, also other letters, telegram etc.
One of the newspapers reported Turner was 4' 8" tall and nicknamed "Tiny" and "Nurse Turner and I ran up the fire escape to the first floor and climbed through a window. The hot water pipes had burst, but we did not get badly scalded."
