£800 - £1,500
Attributed to Alexander Marshal (c1620 - 1682), Two studies of flowers tied with ribbon, watercolour on paper mounted on panel, 20.5 x 15.5 cm, in 18th century carved giltwood and glazed frames
Similar examples of these works, but on vellum, are in the collection of the British Museum. Alexander Marshal was a merchant, gentleman gardener and botanist of rare plants, as well as an artist. He cultivated a garden in Fulham for his landlord John Tradescant and painted at least four albums of flower and insect studies, many of species that were new to Northern Europe or recently discovered. None of these works was commercially published and they are thought to have been formed for the enjoyment of his friends and fellow horticulturists. His 'Florilegium' was presented to King George IV and is in the Royal Collection, and other examples of his work are in the British Museum. Only a small number of his other works are known to exist.
