ROBERT GEMMELL HUTCHISON, RSA, RSW (1855-1936). BATH BEFORE BEDTIME. Signed, oil on canvas 100.5 x 75cm. * Hutchison produced a number of these larger format exhibition pieces in the first decade of the 20th Century, frequently focusing upon domestic scenes with an emphasis upon tenderly patient and maternal care. These were derived in spirit from some artists of the Hague School such as Bernard de Hoog, Bernardus Johannes Blommers and Albert Neuhuys. Indeed, Hutchison's admiration for the work of Jozef Israels almost strays into pastiche yet his work retains at all times a distinctly Scottish individualism. The looseness of technique and broader brushstrokes are quite different from the smaller and finer brushwork seen in his archetypal shoreline or clifftop studies of children. Gemmell Hutchinson's `Asleep` (102 x 76cm, Aberdeen Art Gallery) is comparable.
Lined; some craquelure; some flaked losses lower left; needs a light clean.
