Attributed to John Prescott Knight (1803 - 1881) Portrait of Sir Walter Scott in his study inscribed 'by Knight' (lower right), oil on panel, handwritten label verso dated 1836, 33 x 26 cm, framed 39.5 x 32 cm Footnote Label verso states, 'Sir Walter Scott in his study, by Knight, a young artist of some merit, who staid a few days at Abbotsford, taking a larger likeness. He then expressed a wish to paint one for himself. Sir Walter declined the trouble of sitting again, but invited Knight to come into his study as he pleased and sketch him haphazard. This painting was the result. The figure, attitude, moveables, etc. are exact. The face not so like as in my larger portrait by Colvin Smith (signed) J. Hughes 1836'
