THE 'INDEMNITY OF SAINT DOMINGUE': In 1825 the French Parliament voted to demand compensation of 150 million gold francs (later reduced to 60 million) from the Haitian government to compensate French exiles who were forced to leave Haiti after the 1803 War of Independence. A Royal Commission was established to decide upon the validity of claims on the Indemnity Fund which was set up. The first letter dated 10 Feb. 1832 is a rejection of a claim by M. Carral, sent by P. Dessagnuez, a representative of the "Commission de l'Indemnite de L'Isle St. Domingue". The other letter dated 6 Dec. 1855 from the Indemnity Commissioners to M. Morlot at Bourbonne regarding a payment from the Indemnity Fund. (2 items)
