£950
1691 William and Mary silver Crown (S 3433, ESC 82, Bull 820). Obverse: conjoined draped busts facing right with 'GVLIELMVS · ET · MARIA · DEI · GRATIA' around. Reverse: crowned cruciform shields of royal arms with the date (1691) and 'WM' monograms arranged in the angles, 'MAG · BR FR · ET · HI · REX · ET · REGINA ·’. Grade: VF 35 (# 2915845-003). The accession of William and Mary as joint monarchs in 1689 presented a unique challenge to the mint's engravers. Their coinage shows conjoined busts of the couple with William of Orange in front. The reverse of most of their silver coinage features their combined 'WM' cypher, arranged between the angles of four royal shields with the date and the lion of the House of Nassau in the centre.
