Cecily Sash is a South African artist, recognised as a monumental figure within the history of contemporary art. Sash was an intellectual who shared her experience and knowledge through teaching, at both secondary and tertiary levels, acting as the head of art at Jeppe high school for girls and at the university of the Witwatersrand. Sash along with Sydney Kumalo, Cecil Skotnes and Edoardo Villa, were founding members of the famous Amadlozi art group, a group of artists dedicated to teaching and sharing art.
These activities led her to fear for her safety during Apartheid South Africa and forced her to immigrate to the UK where she continued her practice. Sash’s work has been exhibited both locally and internationally, notably representing South Africa at the 1964 Venice Biennale.

Lot 265, Abstract Composition is comprised of thickly layered paint, caged in a welded steel frame. Both subject matter and the steel frame demonstrate the sculptural influence artists from the Amadlozi group had on her practice. Within this artwork Sash seems to blur the lines between sculpture and painting.

The artwork itself is textured with thick layered paint, creating an almost three-dimensional effect. The design element of the painting also translates directly back into sculpture, assisted by the organic colour palette used throughout. This artwork does not represent an objective reality but rather subjective emotion. This painting demonstrates Sash’s masterful ability to translate what she sees in the world onto canvas and through abstraction.
