Property of a deceased estate - attributed to Sir Godfrey Kneller (British, 1646-1723) - PORTRAITS OF JOSEPH ASHBURY and ANNE DARLING - a pair, oils on canvas, ovals, each approximately 30 by 25ins. (76 by 63.5cms.), in matching gilt oval frames (2). Provenance - Thomas Elrington, husband of Frances Ashbury and son-in-law of Joseph Ashbury and Anne Darling, and thence by family descent. Footnote - Joseph Ashbury (1638-1720) was an eminent actor and manager. He became joint master of the revels in Ireland in 1684, and is believed to have taught Princess Anne (later Queen Anne) to dance. He was an actor for 58 years , and for 45 years (as manager of Smock Alley) the most important person in the Irish theatre, as well as being significant in the history of the British stage, having taught and launched many young actors including Robert Wilks, Barton Booth, and James Quin, and produced plays by George Farquhar and William Philips.
