A BOER WAR DISTINGUISHED CONDUCT MEDAL AND QUEEN'S SOUTH AFRICA MEDAL TO A CASUALTY WITH THE COLDSTREAM GUARDS. A Distinguished Conduct Medal named 418 Pte J. Lazenby. Coldstream Gds, and a Queen's South Africa Medal with Belmont, Modder River, Driefontein, Johanesburg and Diamond Hill clasps, similarly named. Clasps confirmed to the roll. John Lazenby was born at Goole, Yorkshire in 1895. He attested for the Coldstream Guards in February 1895 at the age of 19 years and two months having previously served with the East Yorkshire Militia. He traveled to South Africa on the 21st October 1899 and took part in the action at Magersfontein in December. An action which saw the Highland Brigade and others attack the hill at Magesfontei suffering 800 or so casualties to the Boer's 250. For his gallant action at Magersfontein Lazenby was Mentioned in Lord Robert's Despatches dated 10th September 1901 and was awarded the DCM of the 27 September 1901. The award confirmed in the Gazette 27th September 1901 page 6310. Unfortunately he succumbed to pneumonia on the 19th July 1900 at Walmaren's Farm, Donnerhoek, South Africa. He is buried at Diamond Hill. Mounted for display with copied research.
