A Chinese cinnabar lacquer bowl and cover, late Qing dynasty. The cover carved with dragons chasing the flaming pearl, above floral decoration, the lower part with a painted metal rim, height 13cm, diameter 25.5cm. West Cornwall private seller, by family descent. The vendor inherited items from her great grandfather Captain John Dewar (ship master). He was born in Shanghai in 1866 and died in 1950. His wife Susan Smith Oudney (1875-1967) whose father was William Oudney a master mariner owned two clipper ships including 'The Coach Inn'. John and Susan married in Shanghai in 1896. A crack on the centre of the lid. some losses to the lacquer (see images)  The inside of the box base looks to have painted repairs, and the metal rim is misshapen with chipped paint.
