A good Chinese reticulated bamboo 'sages' brushpot, late Ming/early Qing dynasty, 17th century, finely carved in high relief and open work with six sages beneath a gnarled pine tree and rocky outcrop, the reverse with further pine branches and ornamental rocks, on three shaped bracket feet, the patina a deep reddish caramel tone, 14.5cm high, age cracks

cf. a similar bamboo brushpot sold by Christie’s, Hong Kong, Important Chinese Ceramics and Works of Art (Including The Su Zhu An Collection of Inkstones) sale, 27 November 2013, lot 3362.
Three similar reticulated bamboo brushpots dated to the late Ming appear in Spink & Son Ltd, London, Bamboo & Wood Carvings of China and the East catalogue (numbers 2, 3 and 4) edited by Roger Keverne, November 1979.

Overall of a reddish brown polished tone, one or two small surface dents commensurate with age, a few hairline cracks starting to run up from the foot rim.
