A GOOD MID-17TH CENTURY PINE/CEDAR CHEST, ORNATELY CARVED, STAINED AND DATED 1648. Of show dove-tail boarded construction, extensively railed and decorated to imply panelled cabinet work, the hinged lid with two large lozenge mouldings, and dentil-moulded edges, the front with applied ripple-mouldings and scale-carved uprights to form three ‘panels’ the centre ‘panel’ carved with a large flowerhead the date letters ‘1 6 4 8’ to spandrels, flanked by scroll-carved ‘panels’, centred by an obelisk, the base with three faux drawers, the sides with iron bale handles and stained geometric decoration, height 80.5cm, width 168cm, depth 63.5cm.
