R.M.S. TITANIC: George Willoughby Maynard NA (1843-1912). Graphite drawing of Titanic First-Class passenger and renowned American artist Francis D. Millet, he accompanied his friend Major Archibald Butt. He is noted for his pointed descriptions of life onboard the ship. This piece was executed in 1872 at the Royal Academy of The Arts in Antwerp where Millet and Willoughby studied.
George Willoughby Maynard NA was an American artist born in Washington in 1843. He studied at the National Academy of Design in New York City before traveling widely in Europe. His travels took him to Italy, France, Hungary, as well as Greece, Turkey, and the Black Sea. He spent the longest stretch in Antwerp where he studied at the Royal Academy.
Maynard is well known as a muralist, and one is his best-known murals is on display in the Library of Congress. His paintings are held in notable public collections including 'In Strange Seas' at the Metropolitan Museum of Modern Art and a portrait of Francis Davis Millet which is held by the Smithsonian.
Maynard was a hugely accomplished artist. He was an Academician at the National Academy where he taught various classes. On top of this, he was a member of the Society of American Artists and the American Watercolour Society.
Also being sold with the Lot is a copy of Hugh Brewster's book Gilded Lives, Fatal Voyage where Millet is featured.
