Santo Andre, Cape Verde 1856 A collection of brass trigger guards most marked 'M' together with various musket balls. SANTO ANDRE - 1856 Cape Verde legend has it that a fabulously rich treasure galleon was said to have been wrecked amongst the islands - to which the only known printed reference states: 'Galera. Hespanhola.. Santo Andre. 25 Julho 1856.. Ignora-Se. Iha do Cascalho.. dinheiro.. e babidas um dos mais importantes.' Cousteau searches for the wreck but failed to find it, then divers from Afrimar found it on the Rifona Reef. Silver coins, lead ingots, sets of Iberian money-weights, pottery, weapons and other items were recovered. Coins included Spanish silver reales, as well as Portuguese and English coins. There was no sign of vast treasure however, but this small selection of material from this wreck gives a fascinating insight into the period.
