Henry Winstanley (1644-1703) was Clerk of Works to King Charles II. In 1697, a year after his first design for a lighthouse upon this treacherous rock, Winstanley was overseeing developments when he was captured by a French privateer whose crewman destroyed the initial building work. Undaunted by such a setback, Winstanley went back to work and the lighthouse was finished in 1699. However, a storm on the night of November 26th 1703 destroyed the lighthouse and killed the light-keepers, the workmen and Winstanley himself. *CR Vertical crease, apparently as issued, to trhe right of the house; foxing; slightly unevenly printed with breaks in the border lines and upper left corner; not examined out of frame.
