GB. COVERS & POSTAL HISTORY 1884 POSTAL STRIKES. 1884 (27 Nov, 5 Dec) two letters on embossed Treasury stationery from Ralph Lingen, 1st. Baron LIngen, to George Lefevre, 1st. Baron Eversley both concerning Postal strikes, with interesting contents including in the first "..I wish you would consider the feasibility of employing Military Pensioners, or even men of the reserve, as letter carriers." "We have more than once been threatened with strikes in the great commercial centres," later "In making any such proposals as these, the military authorities would have to be previously consulted. In all such schemes, I have found them ready enough for any promises that may tempt men to enlist, but sensitive on the side of tempting the best men out of the service. A reserve man could be kept in training by carrying letters: I never remember to have seen a corpulent postman". The second letter also included 3 additional confidential letters from the London & North Western Railway. From the Herbert Joyce (third secretary, Post Office) family archive, author "The history of the Post Office", much additional information including a full transcript accompanies. Lot 1440 (M) [c]
