A stoneware pitcher with hinged lid by E. Ridway & Abington, with moulded relief decoration of anti-slavery imagery taken from Harriet Beecher Stowe's novel Uncle Tom's Cabin. One side depicting the escape of Eliza and her young son from being sold into the slave trade. The other side depicting a slave auction, the rostrum bearing a sign advertising 'By auction this day, a prime lot of healthy negroes'. Impressed maker's mark and dated 1858 under. Approx. 6 1/4'' high
