William Henry Prior (1812-1882) - Tregenna Castle, St Ives. Watercolour, circa 1850, signed 'W H Prior' at the lower edge, mount opening 20cm x 31.7 cm, framed and glazed, overall 41cm x 52 cm. Provenance: with Gallery 46, Highworth Wilts, from whom acquired by Mr Harvey. Tregenna was built as a twelve bedroom private home, for a wealthy Cornishman with a love for the sea, in whose family it remained until it sold to the Bolitho banking family, who subsequently sold it to GWR for use as a hotel. The West Wing extension was completed in 1932, around the time when Hitler's Ambassador, Herr von Ribbentrop, visited as part of a tour of Britain. He insisted that on no account should the place be bombed as he wished to live there when 'they' won the war. More recently, in 2021, Tregenna hosted the G7 Summit.
