EARLY LETTERS - 'DOUBLE ADDRESS' COVER EX CALAIS TO LONDON CHARGED "DEN[ARI]I IJ PORTO"; Fine 11 Dec. 1600 EL (neatly folded to show both address-panels side by side; with typed translation) from Callais to London that was originally folded and addressed with the annotation porto [carry this]; but it was then opened and re-folded (presumably by the sender?) and again addressed. This time it was endorsed den[ar]i ij porto [2d to pay for carriage]. Perhaps the sender added a last-minute PS and only then negotiated the postal rate for the carriage of this letter across the Channel. Only 12 Corsini letters with their rates expressed in denarii (pence) were recorded, a handful of which were 2d rates such as this, and most of which were sent from/via Calais. Exhibition Item.
