Philip Eustace Stretton, 1864 -1919 was a British animal and sporting painter working from 1882 until his death. He painted primarily in oil and also watercolour on occasion. Stretton exhibited at the Royal Academy and Sussex Street between 1884 and 1904. He was a great admirer of the work of Sir Edwin Landseer, whose animal paintings had a tremendous effect on him. Many of Stretton's works are illustrated in William Secord’s book on 'Dog Painting’, he is also listed in Paviere and in Christopher Wood’s book on 'Victorian Painters’.

Stretton’s work is characterised by a bold brushstroke with tremendous sympathy for his subject matter. He had an innate ability to capture a moment and the very essence of his subject. He was a very accomplished artist and his dog paintings have a timeless appeal.
