A Distinguished Service Medal group of eight medals, to Leading Seaman Jack Wilfred Gammon DSM MID: Royal Navy Distinguished Service Medal G.VI.R (J 102381 J W Gammon L. Smn) 1939-45, Atlantic (France & Germany clasp), Africa (North Africa 1942-43 clasp), Burma (Pacific clasp) and Arctic Stars, War Medal with three MID oak leaves and Long Service & Good Conduct Medal (J 102381 J W Gammon AB, HMS Arethusa) with a large quantity of ephemera, including original service papers showing Mr Gammon enlisted in 1921, aged 16, examination results, Admiralty letter dated 12th January 1944 notifying Mr Gammon of his DSM "For outstanding devotion to duty, enterprise and resource while serving in HMS Hilary in the Operations which led to the Capture of Sicily", Admiralty London Gazette cards for three mentions in despatches (5th January 1941, 14th November 1944 and 11th June 1946), Buckingham Palace Investiture tickets, photographs, etc. Mr Gammon served under Admiral Sir Philip Vian and later as general factotum after leaving the navy. He is mentioned numerous times in Sir Philip Vian's book "Action This Day", a copy of which is included in the lot. (N.B, DSM suffered some damage when thrown by Mrs Gammon in frustration with the Royal Navy).
