Orchies Political Pottery jug depicting a Russian Bear crushing a Soldier bearing a bag inscribed Coree - the French for Korean - to mark the Russian advancement into Korea in 1898 which ultimately led to the Boxer Rebellion and the Russo-Japanese War. Polychrome glazed majolica with crimson glaze to interior. Impressed mark to base RJ. H 23cm. In 1886 Emile and Joseph L'Herminé Declercq established a pottery in Orchies (Flanders) close to the famous ceramic centre of Saint-Amand-les-Eaux. From the early faience pottery, the brothers moved on to produce majolica wares - including a range of humorous jugs and commemorative jugs - such as this. (M)
