A VERY HIGH-QUALITY RENAISSANCE FONTAINEBLEAU WALNUT BOX, FRENCH, LYON, CIRCA 1540-1550. The deep moulded plank lid with recessed iron hinge and heart shaped lock studs over a mitre moulded front panel carved in Mannerist style with interlaced cherubs on mythical horses flanking a male portrait bust encircled by fruit, the mitred ends with horned Green Man masks, cornucopia of fruit and elaborate iron carrying handles finishing in dragons heads. The rear mitre framed panel with twin scrolling cherubs centred by a cartouche with Rams heads emanating from it. The interior with lidded till to one side retaining the original rebated iron hinges and lock hasp, 50cm wide, 30cm deep and 27cm high. From the second period of the Ecole De Fontainebleau.
