FREDERICK J. TUDGAY (BRITISH, 1841-1921)
The wool clipper 'Samuel Plimsoll' in full sail
Signed and dated 'F Tudgay 1873' (lower right)
Oil on canvas
22½ x 36½in. (57.5 x 93cm.)
The Samuel Plimsoll was built by Hood of Aberdeen in 1873 and registered at 1,440 tons. Ordered by the Aberdeen White Star Line, she regularly carried 350-400 emigrants to Sydney or Melbourne, invariably returning home with a full cargo of wool. At the end of a very successful career, she was on what was to be her first and last voyage to New Zealand in 1902 when she was dismasted off the North Island and had to be towed into harbour. Once there, it was decided not to refit her and she returned to Sydney for use as a coal hulk for her remaining years.
