Built on the highest summit of one of Rome’s seven hills, the 13th century Basilica is Rome’s official city church. Dominated by the wide marble steps, there is so much going on in this watercolour by St Ives artist Clare White. From the boldly outlined statues to verdant shrubbery and people huddled in conversation it is a moment captured in time. Painted circa 1960s.
