Production of the 230 SL commenced in June 1963 and ended on 5 January 1967 with 19,831 produced. Its chassis was based on the W 111 saloon platform, with a reduced wheelbase of 11.8 in, recirculating ball steering, double wishbone front suspension with an independent single-joint, low-pivot swing rear-axle with transverse compensator spring. The dual-circuit brake system had front disc brakes and power-assisted rear drum brakes.
The 230 SL was offered with a 4-speed manual transmission, or an optional, very responsive fluid coupled (no torque converter) 4-speed automatic transmission. From May 1966, the ZF S5-20 5-speed manual transmission was available as an additional option. The 2,308 cc M127.II inline-six engine with 150 bhp and 145 lb/ft torque was based on Mercedes-Benz' venerable M180 inline-six with four main bearings and mechanical Bosch multi-port fuel injection.
This is a nice example of the 230 SL Pagoda, and is a 4 owner car, having been owned by the vendor for the last 20 years.
The car was bought new in 1965 and was owned by lady living in Wentworth. It is said to have not been kept in garage or given respect it deserved. As such, the wheel arches and wings suffered rusting. It was sold in 1978 to S.Bobrowki for approx £2,000 with 85,000 miles on clock.
The car was owned by SB for 11 years. During this time, he replaced the bonnet, wings and wheel arches, had the engine reconditioned & rebored by Mike Clements Engineering (incl. 1 new Mercedes valve costing £150!), had the chrome redone, and a bare metal respray. The speedometer was reset to 0 after the engine reconditioning.
In 1989 the car was sold to J.Clapp who carried out further improvements. The fuel injection unit was rebuilt, new leather and carpets throughout, new hub caps and trims, as well as many other items lost in the mists of time! The car was then sold to the vendor in 1998, who has cherished the car.
The car comes with a hard top, but this will not be present at the auction due to the vendor not being able to put it on the car himself due to it's weight.
