Joseph Durward, Edinburgh, a Scottish George III 8 day oak longcase clock, late 18th/early 19th century, the 12" silvered dial with subsidiary seconds dial and date aperture, signed, the movement striking on a bell, the hood with broken swan neck pediment and plain columns, the long case with a shaped door flanked by fluted quarter columns, 49cm wide, 222cm high, key, pendulum, two weights.
Durward is recorded both Baillie's Watchmakers and Clockmakers of the World and John Smith's book, Old Scottish Clockmakers. He was made a member of the Clockmakers Company in 1775 after writing a paper on "Balance wheel and pinion". He worked for 40 years at 29 Leith Street Edinburgh and retired in 1819.
Sold with a receipt from Robert Morrison of York for £180 in 1974 and another by the same for restoration work for £133 in 1979, including resilvering the dial.
