South Africa, cover and original letter from General Frederick Carrington to his wife, Lizzie. Part of Carrington's Rhodesian Field Force was involved in the Relief of Mafeking. The letter was sent from Mafeking; it has a British Army South Africa/ FPO cancel dated SP 7 00; plus Mafeking/ SP 3 00/ CGH squared circle cancel and London Paid / 29 SP 00 cancel in red. Cheltenham/ 30 SP 00 receiving cancel. The cover is endorsed in manuscript "No stamps obtainable". It is a chatty letter mentioning Lord Roberts, the weather and conditions at the garrison.
