Released in 1961 as more luxurious versions of the Mini, both the Wolseley Hornet and the Riley Elf had longer, slightly finned rear wings and larger boots that gave the cars a more traditional three-box design. Front-end treatment, which incorporated each marque's traditional upright grille design, the Hornet's grille with a lit "Wolseley" badge, also contributed to a less utilitarian appearance. The cars had larger-diameter chrome hubcaps than the Austin and Morris Minis, and additional chrome accents, bumper over-riders and wood-veneer dashboards. The Riley was the more expensive of the two cars. The name "Wolseley Hornet" was first used on 1930s saloon, coupé, sports and racing cars, while the name "Elf" recalled the Riley Sprite and Imp sports cars, also of the 1930s.

Both the Elf and the Hornet went through engine changes. Initially, they used the 848 cc 34 bhp engine, and the 38 bhp version of the Cooper's 998 cc power unit in the Mark II in 1963. The Mark III face-lift of 1966 brought wind-up windows and fresh-air fascia vents. Full-four synchromesh gearing was eventually introduced during 1968. 30,912 Riley Elfs and 28,455 Wolseley Hornets were built. Production of both models ceased in late 1969.

This 1967 Riley Elf Mk III is fitted with 1275cc twin carb engine from a 1992 Mini Cooper. It is an excellent starter, and drives very well indeed. Converted to 12" Minilite wheels with servo assist disc brakes, and it rides on its original hydrolastic suspension. Fitted with a Webasto sunroof, period Astrali steering wheel and Britax seatbelts.

MOTd until September 2018, and under new legislation will qualify for MOT exemption in May this year, and is tax exempt. This is described as an 'enjoy as is' classic or a good driveable basis for restoration. The front door cards, very good replacement bonnet and Colour matched paint are all included in the sale. It would make an ideal cheap starter classic, cosmetically scruffy in places but fully roadworthy. Drive it home from the auction!
